PGT-A is an advanced embryo genetic test

Despite many improvements in the success rates of IVF, national success rates for IVF indicate that only 1 in 3 embryo transfers result in a pregnancy.

Even when a top-quality blastocyst has been transferred, cycle failure has in the majority of cases been shown to be due to an intrinsic genetic chromosome issue within the embryo. Too many or too few chromosomes can result in the embryo failing to develop and implant or lead to a miscarriage or an ongoing pregnancy being affected by a chromosome disorder.

What is PGT-A and who might it help?

PGT-A is a technique used to assess embryos for chromosomal abnormalities and  requires patients to undergo an in- vitro fertilisation (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycle where the embryos are cultured until the blastocyst (day 5 or 6) stage.

One of our highly skilled Clinical Embryology team then removes a few cells from each suitable blastocyst (embryo biopsy) and the blastocyst is then frozen (cryopreservation) to await the results of the cell testing. Checking if an embryo has the correct amount of genetic material does in theory increase the chance of a successful pregnancy by allowing only those embryos that are deemed to be ‘genetically (chromosomally) normal’ following PGT-A to be transferred.

Latest published studies indicate that PGT-A may be of benefit to those who:

  • Are using eggs where the gamete provider is over 37 years old
  • Have experienced multiple failed IVF or ICSI cycles
  • Have had repeat miscarriages where other causes have been excluded
  • Have had a previous pregnancy with confirmed chromosomal abnormality

Whilst important to remember that PGT-A is just a testing method, and does have some risks associated with it, it is hoped that using PGT-A for some patients might ultimately provide a quicker pathway to achieving a live birth. However, in the event this is not achieved it may also help provide some answers to why treatment has not been successful.

HFEA and PGT-A

Although currently a red `add-on` on the HFEA website, Agora is pleased to offer PGT-A as a potential option to its patients as it aims to support the exploration and consideration of any established and scientifically recognised fertility options that may aid the personal fertility journey of any individual or couple.

How can I explore the PGT-A option at the Agora?

PGT-A is not an option for everyone, and the Agora remains firm in its stance that we do not push the unnecessary add-ons that are offered in some clinics, which can lead to false hope and significant financial implication.

However, we are also committed to individualised medical treatment plans, based on scientific evidence, whilst offering compassionate and empathetic support to everyone undergoing treatment.

A discussion of whether PGT-A might be appropriate as part of your fertility journey needs to be held with one of our Fertility Consultants here at the Agora. They will give you information on the process and can guide you on whether it might be something that may be appropriate for your treatment.
